Italian term

variante Ogliastro-Sapri

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping
Sorry, I don't ususally ask proz members to do my whole translation for me, but I'm having a bit of difficulty with this one ;-)....

variante as in Ogliastro-Sapri variante

talking about part of a train track. As I understand it, variante can be translated as a by-pass in terms of a road network, but what about trains, is this acceptable or is there another term? (I don't imagine it's 'variant', but then to be honest I've really no idea).

Many thanks!

new line/route (new Ogliastro-Sapri line/route)

As a tunnel specialist, I've been translating these "varianti" for years.
This is the new line or new route in the sense of one which replaces the old line. Obviously if the old line went through the town and the new one goes round, the new one is a by-pass, but railways don't by-pass towns.

From my database of old translations

Autostrada A1 - Bologna - Firenze – Variante di Valico
A1 Motorway - Bologna - Florence – New route across the Apennines

Il progetto di variante della linea ferroviaria a semplice binario Sibari - Cosenza, tra le stazioni di S. Marco Roggiano e Mongrassano - Cervicati, prevedeva la realizzazione di quattro gallerie
The project to construct a new route for the single track Sibari-Cosenza railway line, between the S. Marco Roggiano and Mongrassano – Cervicati stations required the construction of four 10 m. diameter tunnels

I definitely wouldn't use "by-pass" here for the reasons given, even if by-pass is fine in the UK (I have fond memories of the Doncaster by-pass). New routes to replace old "accidentata" lines are often completely new alternative routes which do not "go round" the difficult part, but are often far from it.
Note from asker:
Yes, I see what you mean perfectly...railway lines don't usually 'bypass' towns, although the 'tratta più accidentata della linea' suggests it was created to deviate traffic away from this area (that's why I was thinking along the lines of bypass). Also the google hits I found for bypass (re. rail) are generally US/AUS-related English. Don't know how likely it'd be in UK English in any case. Thanks very much for your suggestion Jim.
Peer comment(s):

agree Shera Lyn Parpia : Yes, just a variation to the original plan, which doesn't means much unless you know exactly what is being done.

agree Mara Ballarini : I was thinking on the same line, but I wouldn't use "line"-I think the line is Battipaglia-Reggio Calabria; Ogliastro-Sapri is only a 'tratta', ie a piece of the line, probably route, or even 'section' or 'stretch' 4 trains - but certainly using 'new ..'

Yes in fact I usually use route, or sometimes "alignement" the techical term for "tracciato".

Ogliastro-Sapri branch line

I need more information. You could say turnout but this is when a train is "deviated". I think this is about a separate section
Note from asker:
Yes, as in Shera's reply it's a 'variante di tracciato'. I was just wondering about whether bypass is ok for rail as well as for road. There seem to be enough google hits for 'rail/railway bypass' esp. in US English. Thanks very much for your suggestion though!

Italian term (edited): variante (Ogliastro-Sapri variante)

Ogliastro-Sapri bypass

See this text here; I think it is talking about a bypass as it uses the words "variante di tracciato", a variation on the line, which I imagine is a second line or bypass
