Maxomel, thanks for an excellent reference!
Mark Vaintroub (asker) Aug 12, 2006:

Is it possible that there will be two different names for it - (UK) mouth vs (US) throat (piece)?
Mark Vaintroub (asker) Aug 12, 2006:
Да, я знаю, что scabbard. А вот про устье не уверен. Скан - это просто здорово! Дело в том, что мне встречались оба варианта, но варианты эти были не из официальных источников... Джек, буду очень благодарен за скан.

Mouthpiece

I have a book called "Swords of the British Army", with pictures naming pards of swords. This is what the устьё ножен is called in it.

I'll scan in the relevant pages and email them to you.

The most common term for ножни, at least for swords, is scabbard. I acquired a Victorian officer's swod recently complete with its rather tatty chrome-plated scabbard, and I have taken the scabbard to a place that restores old cars to have it re-plated.

agree Libero_Lang_Lab : seems this is it, with throat piece being a less common synonym.

Вот пример из Роберта Говарда (американского новеллиста):

Conan instinctively laid a hand on his hilt. There was blood on his hand, blood clotted about the MOUTH OF HIS SCABBARD, for he had sheathed his blade without cleansing it.
