tapering lane

With all due credit to Zoya for pointing the way

Here's an example:
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/columnists/orl-roadwise2...

"... That area does get congested, especially around rush hours, but the yield signs are not required. If the entrance ramp meets modern safety standards with about 1,200 feet of **acceleration lane** and an additional 300 feet of **tapering lane** for merging from the right, then signs are not required, said Derek Hudson, spokesman for the I-4 public-information office."

Perhaps following Dorene's suggestion one might have "the tapering lane part of the merge lane", as in the newspaper quote above, which is 1200' acceleration lane + 300' tapering lane = 1500' total merge lane.

agree Dorene Cornwell : I think we are all in the same ballpark.

Thanks, Dorene. Yes we are converging!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "chosen this without *lane* because it's not a separate lane but only a part of acc/dec merge lane. Thanks a lot to all of you: Zoya for the scheme in reference, Dorene for refining the understanding. I should add only that *otgon* seems to be builders' slang, not drivers', cause I never heard before this word in such context."

section of speed-change lane

5.4.2 Speed-Change Lanes
Drivers leaving a freeway at an interchange are required to reduce speed as they exit on a ramp. Drivers entering a freeway accelerate until the desired highway speed is reached. Because the change in speed is usually substantial, AASHTO (5) recommends that provision should be made for acceleration and deceleration to be accomplished on auxiliary lanes to minimize interference with through traffic and to reduce crash potential. Such an auxiliary lane, including tapered areas, may be referred to as a speed-change lane. The terms "speed-change lane," "deceleration lane," or "acceleration lane", as used in Reference 5, apply broadly to the "added lane joining the traveled way of the freeway with that of the turning roadway and do not necessarily imply a definite lane of uniform width. This additional lane is a part of the elongated ramp terminal area."

merge lane

The term merge lane or sometimes merging lane would cover either acceleration or deceleration.

Here are some examples of usage:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane
A merge lane is a lane or onramp used to merge two flows of traffic into one, with the merge lane being the lane that disappears at the end of the merging .

http://www.seniordrivers.org/driving/mergew.cfm
Merging is the hardest part about freeway driving, especially when traffic is heavy. Observe the posted speed on the ramp. As you approach the merge lane, start to match your speed to that of the traffic already on the expressway.

Merge lanes are often a full lane width wide at the beginning. At some point the width narrow. This term sounds like the narrowing or tapering part of the merge lane, but I would check for an exact term.
