Russian term

эфир vs трансляция (показ)

Russian to English Other Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Например, "трансляция рекламного ролика в эфире телеканала", "эфирное событие, транслируемое на канале", "показ эфирного события".

Прежде всего интересует, как лучше перевести именно "эфир" ("эфир телеканала")

Discussion

Rachel Douglas Jul 25, 2010:
Still, redundant in some sentences English talks more about time than space, in this context. So, "air time" and "broadcast time," as opposed to the act of "broadcasting," may be something to differentiate. I'll try to formulate this in a suggested answer.
Anna Katikhina (asker) Jul 25, 2010:
Эфир - the *space* where programs are *placed*. Трансляция = actual broadcast of a program. The text is very specialized, so these terms do matter and they do have to be translated differently where possible.
Rachel Douglas Jul 25, 2010:
What's the diff in Russian? Setting aside "прямой эфир" ("live"), I don't see a big difference between something being "on the air" and "broadcast" in English. (Whereas "on-air" is a synonym of "live", AFAIK.). What's the difference between (быть) "в эфире" and "транслироваться" in Russian?
In your sentences, the words sound redundant. Where else would a TV channel be broadcasting something, if not on its own "air time"?

"air time" (broadcast time) vs. "broadcast" (the act of "broadcasting")

These suggestions are based on your elucidation of the question.

"трансляция рекламного ролика в эфире телеканала"
1) Normal, colloquial: "broadcast of a commercial on a TV channel"
2) Super-literal, particular, translate-every-word-to-catch-the distinctions version: "broadcast of a commercial during a TV channel's available/scheduled air time"

"эфирное событие, транслируемое на канале"
(I still hear this as a "live event" aka "on-air event," but I'm taking your word that it doesn't necessarily mean that.)
1) An event aired on this channel.
2) A broadcast event, transmitted/aired on this channel.

"показ эфирного события"
1) ... this event was run/aired/shown on ...
2) ... this broadcast event was run/aired on ... / ... this on-air event was broadcast on ... (N.B. The last version really will be understood as "live.")

For the last one, you can also use verbally derived nouns like "airing", "showing", "running", etc.

... airing of a broadcast event on ...

programming

""трансляция рекламного ролика в эфире телеканала"

a(the) commercial was run on the channel...

или: the channel ran the commercial several times

Про эфирные события можно почитать здесь:
http://www.advesti.ru/publish/video/030505_whatis/
Example sentence:

Programming consisted of several runs a day of the two hour edition of PTL Club, the 90-minute edition of The 700 Club,

the duo of Ann McManus and Maureen Chadwick who had already proved themselves with several runs of the pseudo-lesbian women's prison drama Bad Girls.

Note from asker:
"run" хорошо подойдет под понятие "показ",а вот под "трансляцию" не очень.

прямой эфир — live event, live broadcasting.

on-air event — то, что происходит в эфире, т.е. транслируется; это может, конечно, быть и прямой эфир.
Note from asker:
А не получится, что on-air event - это именно о _прямом эфире_?http://www.google.ru/search?hl=ru&newwindow=1&q=on+air+event&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=
