Russian term

система автоматики аварийных дизелей

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation nuclear power
This is from a description by Sergei Kirienko of what distinguishes the two units at Fukushima (#5 and 6) that emerged intact from the tsunami:

I am assuming that дизель here means "diesel generator," but then I am left with the question of how the "diesels" can be "below the diesels" or "above the diesels." Also the word автоматика is unclear to me: does it mean the automatic controls that start the diesel generator in case of emergency?

Thanks!

unfortunately there is no other context here
Yuri Dubrov Jun 28, 2012:
без этого контекста было не понятно, для чего они
Susan Welsh (asker) Jun 28, 2012:
@ Levis and Yuri Dubrov It seems we haven't agreed on whether дизель means diesel generator or diesel engine, or maybe both -- which affects the question of how a diesel can be above or below a diesel. Is it possible that there are automatic controls for the generator/engine that are located somewhere either above or below the generator itself? (Wikipedia says that the GENERATORS were in the basement at the other Fukushima units, as per the manufacturer's recommendations; that some middle-level engineers at Fukushima had expressed concern about this because of the possibility of flooding, but TEPCO decided to stick with the manufacturer's instructions.)
Levis Jun 28, 2012:
Юрий, Зачем останавливать аварийные ДГУ? Они на то и аварийные, чтобы работать резервом АЭС.

Automated (Control) System of Emergency Diesel Generators

Positioning of DGs automations is quite prudent if the controls are above DGs but not underneath.
Note from asker:
Thanks, I forgot to look at your PDF. This does make sense.
Peer comment(s):

agree TechLawDC : It is the control that is located above or below the diesel. It does not matter whether the "diesel" is an engine or a generator, in this context.
