I will ask you a rhetorical question: what would be reaction of the State Department and the American public if, for example, foreign minister of Japan said in a public interview that the Perl Harbor was not a big deal or there never was such a thing as Perl Harbor, that it was all forged by American propaganda or whatever to use it as a pretext for unleashing the war and ultimately dropping the atomic bomb, etc? High-ranking diplomats have to be very careful indeed as to what say when they go public, especially when it comes to sensitive subjects like the WW II (in Russia and throughout the FSU generally referred to as the “Great Patriotic War”). The death toll there stands at 25 000 000 (versus 400 000 American fatalities) which is appalling in itself, not to mention the unthinkable human suffering and the tremendous destruction that the country sustained during that war. That said, no wonder the Russians take it very personally, when various political clowns (usually driven by someone else’s agenda) not just try to underestimate and derogate the contribution that the Soviet Union made to the victory in WW II, but have the nerve (and the stupidity) to accuse the Soviets of actually invading the Nazi Germany!
