release тоже может быть, но, как по мне - release больше подразумевает физическое действие (освободить из-под стражи), а relieve - ближе к \"чувственному\".
Пардон, за грубый (может и неудачный) пример:
\"облегчиться\" (справить малую нужду) - to relieve - тут физический процесс приносит эдакое внутреннее облегчение...
