Long-winded, but in my opinion this is the only way to convey the meaning. "Stretched three times" could mean just stretched a little bit each time to far less than three times the original length.

Но если серьезно - по-моему так читателю меньше всего усилий потребуется, чтобы понять, что и куда растянуто. Если буквоедствовать (люблю это дело) - некорректно говорить что график растянут относительно оси или ось относительно графика - это означало бы, что на рисунке точка графика (кривой), соответствующая значению х=5 стоит над точкой с координатами (15,0) оси ОХ. На самом же деле участок графика просто ПОКАЗАН с 3-кратным увеличением. Хотя вариант Jack'a по смыслу идентичен

Я бы предложила модифицировать предложение "для пущей ясности":

Потому что суть именно такова: не график растянут вдоль оси (хотя мы так говорим), а растянута ось этого графика.
