Retired as a General-Major
Is a short way to say it.
It's best to write "General-Major", a one-star rank, to avoid confusion with Major General, a two-star rank

: definitely "discharged", but you forgor the "reserve bit"... it should be "discharged to the reserve"

was transferred to the reserve in the rank of...
Я понимаю, это звучит именно как буквальный перевод с русского, но как-то не приходит в голову иного способа подчеркнуть разницу между "увольнением в запас" и "уходом в отставку".
Немного примеров, из гугла вестимо:
"In 1984 - graduated with honors from Novosibirsk High Military and Political University promoted to the rank of Lieutenant of the Marine Corp. 1995 - transferred to the reserve in the rank of lieutenant colonel."
"Was then transfered to the reserve in the rank of a seniour lieutenant."

: I agree but I would use "with" instead of "in" (with the rank of)

Military discharge
Discharge or separation should not be confused with retirement; career U.S. military members who retire are not separated or discharged; rather, they enter the retired reserve and may be subject to recall to active duty.

: Да, согласна: тут надо смотреть на возраст товарища в упомянутом Ольгой 19ХХ году
