i was just giving an example of the word's usage in english from my 'dictionary of english language and culture', longman group uk ltd, i know it's a bit primitive, but what is it you disagree with?
another e.g. from the same source:
we will lend you the money if you can provide a banker's reference (= a note from the bank to say that you are a trustworthy customer)
ok, the dictionary is 1992, but that's the way english is still spoken, at least in the uk.

This is what they use in US in Human relations departments.
Letter of reference may be required from your ex employer.
I just thought of another term - evaluation. I don`t know your context, but if it is an in-house "haracteristika" (to report his progress within company) than it is called evaluation.
