Who are we: intellectuals or (just)"degreed" (or 'educated')
If we have "or" there has to be a contradiction. There is NO contradiction between "intelligentsia" and "academia" (or I do not see it).
Intelligetsia was supposed to be very well educated (so 'academia' "does not ring such a bell").
Intelligetsia was supposed to be very well educated (so 'academia' "does not ring such a bell").

: Yes, and there can also be some wordplay on "degreed" v. (those who have) "disagreed", to point to the dissent that intelligentsia is typically associated with.

Who are we? Intellectuals or a parody of education?
This is version. In my opinion it is not too offensive.

Who are we - the intelligentsia or the academia?
VARIANTS:
-what are we - intelligent or educated?
-are we intelligent or book-smart?
-Do we have the knowledge or did we go to college?

--------------------------------------------------
I do of course realize that English terms \"intelligentsia\" and \"academia\" refer to a much narrower idea than the Russian \"интеллигенция\" и \"образованщина\" do.

: I like your third version, but maybe it's a tad too informal

You are right Dorene, however, I would not call "образованщина " formal, either.

What are we -- the intelligentsia or just a bunch of degree-holders
I feel strongly that "what" is more effective in Enlish that "who" in this case. And this "bunch of..." is the common continuation of this ironic challenge.
Examples
What are we, a bunch of 14-year-olds??

what are we? A bunch of TV watching wimps?

What are we? A bunch of modern John Henrys?
