Tipps für perfekte Nordlichtfotos
Das Nordlicht ist womöglich eines der spektakulärsten Naturphänomene der Welt. Wenn man an einem Ort ist, an dem diese wunderschöne Lichtershow zu sehen ist, möchte man sie natürlich unbedingt auf einem Foto festhalten. Aber das ist gar nicht so leicht. Dennoch: Keine Panik! Diese Tipps helfen dir beim Schießen des perfekten Fotos.
Tipp 1: Lange Verschlusszeit
Das Nordlicht ist auf Fotos, die mit einer längeren Verschlusszeit gemacht worden sind, am besten zu sehen. Stelle deine Kamera auf manuell und die Verschlusszeit auf 15–25 Sekunden. Welche Verschlusszeit du wählst, richtet sich nach der Lichtintensität des Nordlichts. Länger als 25 Sekunden sollte sie aber nicht sein, da sonst die Sterne unscharf werden. Benutze bei einer längeren Belichtungszeit immer ein Stativ. Dadurch verhinderst du Bewegungsunschärfe. Schalte den Bildstabilisator aus – auch seine Bewegungen führen zu unscharfen Bildern.
Tipp 2: Große Blende
Es ist draußen dunkel, wenn du dieses besondere Phänomen fotografierst. Um mit deiner Kamera möglichst viel vom Nordlicht einzufangen, musst du eine große Blende benutzen. Wähle eine Blendenzahl zwischen f2.8 und f5.6, je nach der Lichtintensität des Nordlichts. Mach ein paar Testfotos, um herauszufinden, welche Blendengröße das beste Ergebnis liefert.
Tipp 3: Vorsicht mit hohen ISO-Werten
Grundsätzlich sollte der ISO-Wert möglichst niedrig sein, weil das Foto sonst körnig werden kann. Versuche auch beim Fotografieren des Nordlichts einen möglichst niedrigen ISO-Wert einzustellen. Erst wenn dein Foto mit einer langen Verschlusszeit und einer großen Blende noch nicht hell genug ist, änderst du die ISO-Einstellung. Bei manchen Kameras wird das Bild erst sehr spät körnig. Schau also unbedingt, wie deine Kamera auf höhere ISO-Werte reagiert.
Tipp 4: Autofokus deaktivieren, manuell scharfstellen
Im Dunkeln haben die meisten Kameras Probleme mit der Scharfstellung. Um zu verhindern, dass deine Nordlichtfotos unscharf werden, benutzt du die manuelle Scharfstellung. Drehe am Objektivring, bis das Bild scharf ist. Kontrolliere, ob es geklappt hat, indem du über den Liveview zum Beispiel einen Planeten heranzoomst. Justiere den Fokus, bis alles richtig scharf ist, und drehe danach nicht mehr am Objektivring. Mach das Foto nun mit Hilfe des Selbstauslösers, der Fernbedienung oder der App.
Tipp 5: Im RAW-Format fotografieren
Fotografen, die gut mit Bearbeitungsprogrammen umgehen können, sollten im RAW-Format fotografieren. Ein Foto im RAW-Format enthält nämlich viel mehr Bildinformationen als ein JPEG-Foto. Dadurch ist es einfacher, im Nachhinein am Computer kleine Dinge anzupassen und so das Foto zu perfektionieren. Dabei gilt: besser überbelichtet als unterbelichtet. Es ist nämlich leichter, helle Bereiche dunkler zu machen, als Licht in ein Foto zurückzubringen.

How to Take the Perfect Picture of the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights are among the most spectacular natural phenomena on the planet. If you’re lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time to view the Lights, you’ll almost certainly want to take a picture. Easier said than done. But fear not! We’ve put the following tips together to help you take the perfect snapshot of this light show.
Tip 1: Slow Shutter Speed
The Northern Lights show up best in photographs that were taken using a slow shutter speed. Switch your camera to manual and adjust the shutter speed to 15-25 seconds. Select the shutter speed according to the intensity of the Lights. Avoid setting the shutter speed to more than 25 seconds, because this will make the stars appear blurry. For longer exposure times, always use a tripod- this will help you avoid any motion blur. Also, switch off the picture stabilizer, because its movement could also cause the final image to become blurry.
Tip 2: Use a Large Aperture
It’ll be dark outside when you snap your picture of the Aurora. In order to ensure that your photos capture as much of the Lights as possible, it’s important to use a large aperture. Select an aperture between f2.8 and f5.6, depending on the Lights’ intensity. Take a few test pictures to figure out which aperture offers the best result.
Tip 3: Watch Out for High ISO Levels
As a rule of thumb, the ISO number should be as low as possible; otherwise, the picture might turn out grainy. The same goes for photographing the Northern Lights: try setting the ISO number as low as possible. You should only change the ISO setting if the picture still isn’t bright enough with a slow shutter speed and a large aperture. When using certain cameras, the image takes a while to become grainy. That’s why it’s so important to test out how your camera reacts to high ISO levels.
Tip 4: Deactivate Autofocus and Focus Manually
In the dark, most cameras have issues focusing. To avoid blurry photos of the Northern Lights, try using manual focus. Rotate the lens until the image is clear. You can ensure the image is focused by using Liveview to zoom in on a planet. Adjust the focus until everything is crystal clear, and then don’t touch the lens. Finally, use the self-timer, the remote, or the app to snap your picture.
Tip 5: Take a RAW Picture
Photographers who are adept at using editing software should opt for taking pictures in RAW format. A photo in RAW format contains considerably more image information than a simple JPEG image. This makes it easier to make small tweaks after the fact to perfect the image. However, don’t forget that it’s better to have too much light than too little light. It tends to be much easier to make bright areas darker than adding in light to an image after the fact.
