The CBS country variety show Hee Haw is often mentioned in catalog texts and magazine reviews of Aaron’s work. Oftentimes, the reference serves as a convenient tether to goofball pop culture, grounding the artist’s otherwise complex allusions in the more easily understood mainstream. Frankly, Aaron’s use of Hee Haw is less about its ***pickin’ n’ grinnin’ knee-slapping aspect*** and more about the stage sets (three-dimensional barns, backyard fences and shotgun shacks, collapsed into two-dimensional interlocking and free-standing planes). But there is something to be understood about Hee Haw as a site of cultural influence, specifically regarding the construction of “we simple country folk” identities, in Aaron’s work.

(ha meno a che vedere con) l'aspetto comico della rozza vita rurale e della musica country
It is one of those American folk traditions and humor that cannot be translated. Hee Haw (I have watched it) could be the equivalent of the barzellete about the Carabinieri or the Southern Italians (no offense meant to either). In order to understan the joke you must know and understand the culture. Watching the show now the firs thing that comes to mind is: "this is really stupid", just like the barzellette that no longer make you laugh. But it is part of one aspect of a culture that was easy to make fun of.

Sorry. They were not making fun of the culture or the people, they were laughing together with them. Remember Toto'? He is the perfect example.
