German term

weniger empfindlichen Keimen

German to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Antibiotics
Hello! Context: Product information for an antibiotic.

EN = Where necessary, the daily dose in adults and children can be doubled in particularly severe cases or in patients with infections that have fewer susceptible bacteria.

I am confused about the "fewer susceptible bacteria". This makes no sense to me microbiologically and therefore I am concerned I have misinterpreted... Could it be a lower susceptible bacterial count? Any ideas would be most welcome!

Hey Andy,

the medical Mafia is always here to serve as your "Feindbild", helping you acting out all this daily stress and frustration to the benefit of your overall health.

Obviously, I meant: This site would benefit from even more contributors who show the same level of knowledge as uyuni et al
(Not: This site is short of contributors who display knowledge)

Agree with both answers. You could also come from the other direction and say "more resistant bacteria".

less susceptible bacteria/pathogens

My take...

Therefore, dosage intervals may have to be increased to q 12 h or q 24 h for *less susceptible bacteria*.

Higher dosage may be needed for severe infections or those caused by less susceptible bacteria.

This may be increased to 40mg/kg/day in divided doses in otitis media, sinusitis, more serious infections and those caused by *less susceptible bacteria*.

less responsive bacteria

Just seems more logical to me!

pathogens with lower antimicrobial susceptibility

uyuni's answer is OK as well, but we can safely add 'antimicrobial' here because we know what susceptibility they're talking about...

When the germs are less susceptible to antimicrobials (antibiotics), the dose may be increased. Logical, isn't it?

more resistant pathogens

They need a HIGHER dose, which means they are more resistant

OK, then

"pathogens of increased resistance"

highly resistant pathogens

neutral Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) : but "more resistant pathogens" can also mean "more pathogens that are resistant"...thus, it does not solve Craig's question
