Discussion

Paul O'Brien (asker) Apr 2, 2008:
no, they have wholesale and retail customers who sell their products and who they treat more or less as if they were their own sales reps (they even provide training courses for them and "supervise" and "oversee" them). in fact the thing had me puzzled for a while until i finally managed to turn my brain on its head. so, it's deffo "trattanti". doesn't get a lot of hits on google, but the term seems to exist.
Fanny Meroni Apr 2, 2008:
Non sarà un errore di stampa? Nel contesto sembra più probabile un incremento dei clienti trattati dall'autore del cv.

clients selling the firm's products

hi pauley

This is a rather awkward expression used in the retail business to describe those (intermediate) clients (shops, retailers, etc.) selling the firm's products. It is used mostly for branded products. Have a look at this:

I am not quite sure I've given you the best translation, but I do hope the sense is clear.

"trattare un prodotto" means to deal in a product.
Note from asker:
yeah, these are precisely branded products.

agree simon tanner : sounds good to me

cheers Simon!
neutral James (Jim) Davis : Could they be licensed retailers?

Could be, although nothing in the texts I've seen seems to imply that. As I explained in the note, "trattare un prodotto" means to deal in a specific product, whether you are licensed or not. I could be wrong, but licensed shoul be "autorizzati".
