Russian term

тычок

Russian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
This word is included in a caption for chalk and charcoal (as two of the earliest writing instruments). This is the whole caption:

"Мел и уголь — одни из самых ранних инструментов, задававших форму знаков. Процесс письма дробился на серии мелких тычков."

I am also unsure about the exact meaning of "дробился" here (although that might become clearer when I know what "тычков" refers to).

All ideas/suggestions VERY gratefully received. Thanks :)

The meaning is that letters were not written continuously (as curved lines) but were rather depicted as a series of dots (like by a 'one-needle' printer).

There could be a better word in English to describe the gist of the process.
