Russian term

совпадать между собой

Russian to English Science Science (general) scientific writing

Discussion

Simon Hollingsworth May 30, 2006:
Dylan's got the idea, I think. This is what I meant when I added 'in their respective cases'.
Dylan Edwards May 30, 2006:
or "in the case of each of these functions, F(t) and f(t), the blablabla practically coincides with the blablabla".
Dylan Edwards May 30, 2006:
I don't know the correct way of wording this, but would suggest something on the lines of "F(t) and f(t) respectively show near-coincidence between their first-model and second-model forms".
Nik-On/Off (asker) May 30, 2006:
If I write "the functions F(t) and f(t),..., coincide/practically match", woudn't that mean F(t) = f(t)? Note that this is not the case here.
I need to word it so that F1(t) = F2(t) and f1(t) = f2(t).
Simon Hollingsworth May 30, 2006:
A fair point from Kirill, although something can almost/practically coincide/be the same/be identical. You could say 'are a close match', but then, there must be plenty more examples to add to the list below
Kirill Semenov May 30, 2006:
Штука в том, что они либо совпадают, либо нет. А вот "практически совпадают" - я лично слабо понимаю.
Nik-On/Off (asker) May 30, 2006:
Кирилл так какие функции basically the same?

coincide

I don't think "with each other" is necessary, but I don't think "между собой" is necessary either.

Thank you.
agree Dorene Cornwell : The point being that the functions coincide under the conditions described, but wording of how to translate that might be a separate question

Thank you.
agree Ara Mkrtchyan (X) : No 'with each other', it's superfluous here.

are (basically) the same

"практически совпадают" не очень-то понятно, предлагаю basically для этого смутного дела.

agree Olga Cartlidge : Thank you, Simon. Would " in essence identical" be possible ? ( "Practically match" is very good, it says it all)

Thank you, Olga. I suppose you could say 'almost identical', which is another valid version. 'In essence identical' is also OKish, but then we could go on for days, couldn't we?! :-)
agree Simon Gregory : I like it, How about "to be in close proximity"?

(they) are practically similar

i'd probably put it that simple.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Simon Hollingsworth : You can say 'practically coincide' or 'almost identical', but you CANNOT say 'practically similar'

agree with each other

I think Jack's answer is fine, but here's another option. This would make clear that the statement involves two distinct functions which are not necessarily equal under all circumstances.
