The General Secretary of Damascus Arab Capital of Culture 2008 proposes internationally important original ceramics grouped together, ahead of their presentation in the V&A’s refurbished ceramics galleries in London, which will reopen in September 2009.
The exhibition is sponsored by Shell (Syria), with major support from the General Directorate of Antiquities & Museums and from the British Council in Syria.
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), London, is the world’s leading museum of art and design, and it boasts the largest ceramics collection in existence.
World Ceramics: Masterpieces from the V&A is the first international exhibition to be held in Syria and in the region by the V&A. It tells a compelling story of international contacts over five millennia. It is a rare opportunity to see 116 of the greatest treasures and examples that have not been seen outside the V&A since their acquisition.
The exhibition explores the history of international ceramics from 3000 BC to the present day and examines specific areas or periods, looks at the cross-currents between Asia, the Middle East and Europe and at the luxury wares made for European Medieval and Renaissance courts. The exhibition concludes with a survey of 20th-century ceramics, ranging from Russian Revolutionary porcelains to Post-Modern ceramic sculpture. A highlight of this section is Picasso’s 1954 vase painted with the ‘Artist at his Easel’.
The Middle East, and Syria in particular, played a leading role in this story. Syria has been producing ceramics for more than 8000 years, making it one of the world’s earliest centres of pottery production. Syrian ceramics from the collection of the National Museum of Damascus will join the exhibition at the Khan As‘ad Basha. These represent the achievement of Syrian potters in the 12th to 14th centuries, when they mastered a range of techniques, including coloured glazes, painting under the glaze, and lustre decoration – these being three of the great contributions of Islamic potters to the history of ceramics.

تستضيف الأمانة العامة لاحتفالية دمشق عاصمة الثقافة العربية 2008 في هذا المعرض مجموعة من قطع السيراميك ذات الشهرة العالمية، وذلك قبل عرضها في صالات عرض السيراميك المرممة حديثاً في متحف فيكتوريا & ألبرت والتي سيعاد افتتاحها في أيلول 2009.
هذا ويعد متحف فيكتوريا & ألبرت من المتاحف الرائدة عالمياً في مجال الفن، ويمتلك أكبر مجموعة سيراميك في العالم.
من الجدير بالذكر أن هذا المعرض العالمي هو الأول الذي يقيمه المتحف الإنكليزي في سوريا والمنطقة عموماً، ليحكي قصة تواصل إنساني استمر لأكثر من خمسة آلاف عام، ويشكل فرصة نادرة لرؤية 116 قطعة من كنوز لم تبصر النور خارج متحف فيكتوريا & ألبرت منذ اقتنائها، وهي قصة لعبت فيها سوريا والشرق الأوسط دوراً رائداً، إذ عرفت سوريا إنتاج السيراميك لأكثر من ثمانية آلاف عام لتكون واحدة من أقدم مراكز صنع الخزف في العالم.
يستعرض المعرض تاريخ السيراميك في العالم ابتداء من 3000 ق.م. إلى يومنا هذا، ويخرج بمسح شامل لصناعة السيراميك في القرن العشرين، ابتداء من قطع الخزف الثورية في روسيا حتى منحوتات ما بعد الحداثة
كما سيتم عرض مجموعة من مقتنيات المتحف الوطني من السيراميك، وتمثل هذه القطع إنجاز الخزافين السوريين بين القرنين الثاني عشر والرابع عشر.
يقام المعرض برعاية شركة شيل في سوريا، وبدعم كبير من المديرية العامة للآثار والمتاحف، والمجلس البريطاني في سوريا.
يفتتح المعرض في 26 ت2 ويستمر حتى 8 ك2 2009 في خان أسعد باشا العظم

ولد كارلوس ساورا في هويسكا. بدأ كمصور فوتوغراف محترف. دخل سنة 1952 الى معهد الدراسات و التجارب السينمائية. تخرج سنة 1957 و شغل منصب استاذ الاخراج السينمائي حتى أبعد لأسباب سياسية سنة 1964. يعتبر كارلوس ساورا اليوم المخرج الاسباني الأكثر أهمية على المستوى الدولي. حاز على جوائز عديدة في مهرجانات كان و برلين و رشح لجائزة أوسكار أفضل فيلم أجنبي سنة 1979.
أنطونيو غاديس
ولد أنطونيو غاديس سنة 1936 في ايلبا، في ريف آليكانت. كان عمره سنة و نصف عندما حكم على والده بالاعدام رميا بالرصاص. وبعكس كل التوقعات ورغم رصاصة الرحمة نجا الأب. استقرت العائلة بعدها في مدريد. مهنة الأب العامل في الفسيفساء لم تعد على العائلة بالكثير فاضطر أنطونيو أن يبدأ حياته كبالغ في دكاكين
المصورين. حيث كان يموت من الملل. في الثالثة عشرة اهتم أيضا بالصحافة. بدأ غاديس يهتم بعدها بالرقص و دخل الى الأكاديمية سنة 1952حيث حصل على الشهادة بأقل من سنة و دخل في فرقة بيلار لوبيز التي اعتبرها دوما معلمته الحقيقية.
" لم أكن أعرف شيئا، لكن كان بامكاني أن أقلد كل ما يقوم به الآخرون. كنت سعيدا، كنت أمتلك جسد رياضي محترف و دما كريما، كما لو كان هناك ثور في داخلي. "
ترك الفرقة سنة 1960 ليوقع كوريغرافيا ل بوليرو رافيل مع أنطونيو غودي في أوبرا روما. " كانت أيام مترعة بالنشاط، ملأى بالمشاريع المحققة، بالمغامرات، بالاندفاعات السريعة."
في ذات الفترة حقق عرضا لمهرجان سبوليتو و قبل منصب الراقص الأول و الكوريغراف و أستاذ الباليه في أوبرا سكالا في ميلانو.
اعتبر غاديس أن ذلك كان خطأه الوحيد. سافر مع الآكتورز ستوديو و أقام لفترة قصيرة في باريس. ثم عاد الى اسبانيا و جمع مجموعة من الراقصين و استفاد من عقد في نيو يورك ليزيد عددهم و يؤسس بذلك نواة ما سيغدو فرقة الباليه الخاصة به.
خلال موسم 1968- 1969حاز على جائزة النقاد في مسرح الأمم في باريس، هذه الجائزة أعانت تكريسه كفنان دولي. قدم بعدها عروضه في كل دول العالم. و سنة 1978 عين مديرا للباليه الوطني الاسباني. أسس بعدها فرقة جديدة فيها بعض من راقصي فرقته السلبقة مثلكريستينا هويوس، خوان أنطونيو خيمينيس، بيلار كارديناس، أنريكه ايستيف و عازف الغيتار و المؤلف ايميليو دي دييغو. أخرج عندها باليه عرس الدم المستوحاة من مسرحية فريدريكو غارسيا لوركا. حضر كارلوس ساورا تدريبات العرض و اقترح عليه انجاز فيلم انطلاقا من العرض. حاز هذا العرض المبرمج في مسرح باريس سنة 1982 مع المتتالية الفلامنكية على مجد حقيقي. هذا التعاون تجدد مع كارمن التي وقعها ساورا و غاديس معا عرض باليه و فيلم. قدم غاديس و فرقته الباليه في مسرح باريس الذي غدا مسرحهم تقريبا في أيار 1983 فيما حاز الفيلم على جائزتين في مهرجان كان.

Carlos Saura
Carlos Saura was born in Huesca. He started out as a professional photographer. In 1952, he entered the Institute of Investigations and Cinematographic Experiences. He graduated in 1957, and held the post of film-directing professor in the same institute, before being forced out for political reasons in 1964.
Today, Carols Saura is internationally recognized as the most prestigious director of the Spanish Cinema. He won many prizes in Cannes Film Festival. In 1979, he was nominated for the Oscar Best Foreign Film Award.

Antonio Gadès was born in 1936 in Elba, a province in Alicante. He was one year and a half when his father was shot. Against all odds, and despite the coup de grace, he survived.
Soon after, the family moved to Madrid. The money his father earned from his work in mosaics was not enough, so Antonio had to start his adulthood working in photography back shops, where he died of boredom.
At the age of thirteen, he started working in journalism, the "other back shops" as he called it, but it lasted only little.
Antonio Gadès started to take an interest in dancing and entered the Academy in 1952. He obtained his diploma in less than one year, and entered the troupe of Pilar Lopez, whom he considered his veritable professor.
"I knew nothing, but I could imitate everything the others used to do. I was happy. I had the body of an athlete, and hot blood. It was as if there were a bull inside me", He said.
In 1960, He left the troupe to carry out the choreography of Ravel's Bolero with Antonio Gaudi at the Rome Opera.
"These were the active days, many projects accomplished, many adventures and quick fevers", he comments.
In the same period, he finished a creation for the Spoleto Festival, then accepted to be the first dancer and ballet instructor in the Scala de Milan. Antonio Gadès considered this to be his only mistake.
He travelled with the Actor's Studio and stayed in Paris for a short while, then returned to his country where he gathered some dancers. He took advantage of a contract in New York to increase the number of dancers, and form the core of what would later become his ballet company.
During the season of 1968-1969, he won le Prix de La Critique in the Théâtre des Nations, Paris. This marked his consecration. With his company, he started to present his spectacles all over the world. In 1978, he became director of the National Ballet of Spain. Afterwards, he formed a new company which included some dancers from his previous troupes, such as Cristina Hoyos, Juan Antonio Jimenez, Pilar Cardenas, Enrique Esteve as well as the guitarist and composer Emilio de Diego.
He directed the ballet Blood Wedding inspired by the work of Federico Garcia Lorca. Carlos Saura who attended one of the rehearsals proposed to adapt it into a film. This oeuvre, along with Suit flamenco gained a real triumph in the Théâtre de Paris in February 1982.
This collaboration was repeated in Carmen of which they signed together the ballet and the film. In 1983, Antonio Gadès and his troupe created the ballet in the Théâtre de Paris which had almost become their own theatre. The film obtained two prizes in the Cannes Festival.
Antonio Gadès died in July 2004.

I have been working as a freelance translator for a leading software company in Qatar . I had also worked for an important event that took place in my city during the year 2008 which is " Damascus Arab Capital of Culture 2008". I was the official website administrator, and in charge of editing and revising the monthly programme issued in both Arabic and English languages.
I have a passion for languages and have been working really hard on this. One of my acheivements was to win a writing competition in French language organised by the French Cultural Centre in Damascus 2006. I enrolled in many English courses, the last one being "Public Speech and Advanced Conversation" course held in Damascus University's Language Institute.
