CARRER OBJECTIVE: Translator from English into Spanish
• To write an accurate translation of the original text preserving its integrity, meaning, essence, style, tone and nuance of the written words using the vocabulary and style most appropriate for the intended use of the translation.
• To analyze, comprehend and correctly translate the complex structures and communications of real-world documents.
• To respect faithfully the message, sense, style and purpose of the original English text while producing a Spanish translation that reads like an original.
• To maintain open, honest, effective, confidential dialogue with the translator’s client and to deliver the translated document in the required format at the date and time agreed.

QUALIFICATIONS
International Cross-Cultural Café is a unique Mexican service that specializes in accurate, top-quality, reliable and quick translations and interpretation between English and Spanish of professional, marketing, export/customs, financial and legal documents for the geological, mining and metallurgical sectors. ICCC’s primary focus is on the cultural diversity inherent in verbal and written communications and aims for the smoothest, best understood translations of valuable information relating to North-Latin American mining projects. More importantly, ICCC's extensive educational and work experience in exploration, feasibility studies and a wide variety of mining and metallurgical projects ensures precise and compelling translations of marketing literature, user instructions, catalogues, technical manuals, professional papers and/or articles, web sites, etc.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Dr. Mattos has more than 25 years experience not only as an English/Spanish translator/interpreter but also in the fields of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, Management, Business and Cross-Cultural Communications. He holds an English/Spanish Certificate in Professional Translation from the University of Toronto, a Language Interpreter Certificate from Seneca College at Toronto, a Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana and the Colorado School of Mines, respectively, and a B.Sc. in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering from the National University of Colombia. He also attended the Master of Manufacturing Management at McGill University at Montreal, the Saint Fois’ Cegep and Laval University both at Quebec for mastering French as a second Language.
Dr. Mattos’ translator/interpreter experience is very broad. A very short list of the work done only for CAMESE (Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Service for Export (http:// www.camese.org) is available upon request. His translator/interpreter experience have been backed up not only with his industrial and academic experiences but also with a very strong academic background: his engineering career started as a head of a metallurgical production plant followed by an appointment as director of a very large international open pit coal mining project; and then as general manager of several ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical plants. He also has been a university professor of leading Latin America universities teaching courses related to Mining and Metallurgical Engineering.

INDUSTRIAL
• Started-up and directed engineering and managed operations of an aluminum piston (permanent mold)
manufacturer company. Identified market, planned lay-out, selected and purchased equipment.
Conceived and executed organizational development master plan for manpower and resource.
Developed, adapted and negotiated new processes and technologies. Result: Efficient and productive
company for the after-market automotive parts components, producing more than 350,000 pistons per
year, saving several millions US$ to government and advanced local technological developments.
• Initiated, planned, developed, coordinated and directed production operations of one the largest open
pit mine of the world. Recommended selection and purchase of equipment; coordinate recruitment and
administered more than 200 persons included 18 engineers with a budget of several US$ per year.
Administered contracts and supervise coal transport to port and export operations. Administered project
contractors’ companies with more than 360 persons, including 22 professionals, for deposit exploitation
and control. Conferred and coordinated activities with high level management (financial, marketing,
human resources, etc.) as well as with top executives’ contractors and equipment and materials suppliers for accomplishment production and marketing goals. Results: Early production goal accomplishments
anticipated market sales ahead of schedule by seven months and budget reduction by 6%. Production
goals exceeded for more than 50%. Sales in excess of several US$ millions.
• Discovered an American revolutionary patented centrifugal casting machine and process, being
produced by a company in Birmingham, Alabama; redesigned the machine and adapted the process to
suit the automotive cylinder liner market in South America. Result: Founded and developed a company
which produces more than 800,000 liners per year.
• Founded, designed and implemented centrifugal and continuous casting production processes and
quality control procedures for a copper alloys processing company. Result: Managed, fully developed a
company and created more than 80 jobs with sales over several US$ million.
 Directed the New Products and Processes Developments Department (including its chemical,
metallographic, and mechanical testing laboratories) for a leading steel processing company;
selected materials and implement new processes, modified production process parameters, established
process control procedures for its iron and steel making plants, water distribution pipe plant, fittings
plants, hot dip galvanizing plant among others. Negotiated and implemented new technologies (Lost
Foam Casting).
 Directed production processes, modified process parameters and established process control
procedures for a forging plant. Directed and supervised production operations of steel springs
manufacturing plant for heavy load trucks. Researched and modified chemistry and heat treatment
production process parameters for malleable iron fittings plant. Results: Significant reduction in
defective products and clients’ complaints as well as improved productivity was obtained in each of the
company’s plants.

ACADEMIC
• As a university professor, I offered postgraduate courses at several Metallurgical and Mechanical
Departments of leading universities on Analytical Chemistry, Fire Assay, Physical and Mechanical
Metallurgy, Phase Transformation on Metallic Systems, Mechanical Behavior of Materials and Fracture
Mechanics, among others.
• Planned, promoted, coordinated and directed academic events: courses, conferences, seminars, etc
for institution dedicated to the continuous education of Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgical and Materials
Engineering. Hired engineers and supervised academic activities. Results: Created 8 full time and more
than 18 pat-time professional jobs and offered 20 + courses to more than 240 professionals.

RESEARCHER
• Researched the fatigue life of welded structures for the Fracture Control Program
(http://www.mie.uiuc.edu/content/asp/research/research_centers/fracture_control_program.asp) at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; in conjunction with a very prominent research team working
for the Program; we developed a model for the prediction of the Total Fatigue Life of Welded
Structures using Low Cycle Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics concepts.
• Researched and developed a model for predicting the composite hardness of continuous cooled
steels using isothermal TTT data.
• Researched and modified chemistry and heat treatment production process parameters for a
malleable iron fittings company.

CONSULTANT
• Managed engineering consulting firm to assist engineering and manufacturing organizations to improve
performance, quality levels, redesign plant layouts, equipment selection and purchasing.
