French to English: LE ROLE DU CSEM DANS LE DÉVELOPPEMENT DU SENFINE / CSEM’S ROLE IN DEVELOPING THE SENFINE
Source text - French LE ROLE DU CSEM DANS LE DÉVELOPPEMENT DU SENFINE
Translation - English CSEM’S ROLE IN DEVELOPING THE SENFINE
(SWISS CENTER FOR ELECTRONICS AND MICROTECHNOLOGY)
“I knew that this project had potential even before finding out about it, simply because it came from Pierre,” said CEO of CSEM Mario El Khoury - a phrase which says a lot about the physicist’s creative and scientific genius.
Pierre Genequand came up with it when he retired - he was delighted to have time to develop an idea which was close to his heart. In 2004, he presented a wooden model to CSEM (his former employer) which was made in his kitchen and carried the promise of an unprecedented watch regulator.
CSEM’S STORY
CSEM (Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology) was born in the 80s from the Federal Council’s desire to not fall behind in new technology. In 1984, three businesses in Neuchâtel merged to become CSEM. All three were active in the microtechnology sector, though predominantly specialised in watchmaking. They were the Centre Electronique Horloger, the Laboratoire Suisse de Recherches Horlogères and the Fondation Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique.
Over time, the new company broadened its horizons, innovating markets such as health, space, environment and transport. It distinguished itself in several ways, for example by designing the first optical mouse, and creating the miniature cameras which observed the Churyumov–Gerasimenko comet in 2014. CSEM is currently collaborating with the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, as well as several other prestigious players in the scientific field who are making an impact.
Although microtechnology may be CSEM’s current keyword, the watchmaking mark is still very present. Their laboratories are where the first watch microprocessor was created, and where silicon technology was developed for this industry. Researching precision and energy efficiency, as well as CSEM’s experience in miniaturisation remain ingrained in their DNA. Pierre Genequand’s regulator is probably the best example of this.
FROM THE 20:1 MODEL TO THE 5:1 PROTOTYPE
The 20:1 model that Pierre Genequand presented to CSEM, with its unusual shape and makeshift balance weight, already contained all of the functions of the watch regulator that would be created from it. The system was perfectly clear in the inventor’s head, and portrayed the theoretical principles of space engineering that he was so familiar with: a system without friction, play or lubrication, eliminating all energy dissipation. Pierre Genequand’s model showed that the system was going to work, that the idea was indeed an invention. However, what the model did not show was the system’s potential. CSEM revealed this through a successive development: the 5:1 prototype.
This second model illustrated energy efficiency and isochronism, which are the invention’s essential criteria. In this development, CSEM’s former watchmaker employees (who had been working in 1984 for the companies which merged to create CSEM) provided invaluable help. Possessing both horological and engineering knowledge, they were able to train and advise the current teams in their work on a more sophisticated 5:1 prototype. The chosen 5:1 size enabled the potential of the invention to be highlighted in an easily visible dimension. It also made it possible to work with classic materials - steel instead of silicon - and thus to use conventional manufacturing methods, which are wire cutting (electrical discharge machining) and CNC machining.
After three years of research and development conducted at CSEM, the 5:1 model worked. Its efficiency confirms the achievement of Pierre Genequand’s invention, and suggests an unprecedented power reserve. CSEM is now in search of a partner capable of giving life to this exceptional watch regulator.
