Discussion
As far as I know they never use the word "area". The word "extend" for the "spread" idea. "Abundance"? Have you ever met it?
If that is the case, they seldom use the word "area" to talk about the measure. In some reports I have seen, "area" is synonymous with "location". The spread of a certain cell type is referred to as "microscopic extent" or simply "abundance".
