Options are traded both on exchanges and in the over-the-counter market. There are two basic types of options. A call option gives the holder the right to buy the underlying asset by a certain date for a certain price. A put option gives the holder the right to sell the underlying asset by a certain date for a certain price. The price in the contract is known as the exercise price or strike price; the date in the contract is known as the expiration date or maturity. American options can be exercised at any time up to the expiration date. European options can be exercised only on the expiration date itself. Most of the options that are traded on exchanges are American. In the exchange-traded equity options market, one contract is usually an agreement to buy or sell 100 shares. European options are generally easier to analyze than American options, and some of the properties of an American option are frequently deduced from those of its European counterpart.
It should be emphasized that an option gives the holder the right to do something. The holder does not have to exercise this right. This is what distinguishes options from forwards and futures, where the holder is obligated to buy or sell the underlying asset. Note that whereas it costs nothing to enter into a forward or futures contract, there is a cost to acquiring an option.
Call Options
Consider the situation of an investor who buys a European call option with a strike price of $60 to purchase 100 Microsoft shares. Suppose that the current stock price is $58, the expiration date of the option is in four months, and the price of an option to purchase one share is $5. The initial investment is $500. Because the option is European, the investor can exercise only on the expiration date. If the stock price on this date is less than $60, the investor will clearly choose not to exercise. (There is no point in buying, for $60, a share that has a market value of less than $60.) In these circumstances, the investor loses the whole of the initial investment of $500. If the stock price is above $60 on the expiration date, the option will be exercised. Suppose, for example, that the stock price is $75. By exercising the option, the investor is able to buy 100 shares for $60 per share. If the shares are sold immediately, the investor makes a gain of $15 per share, or $1,500, ignoring transactions costs. When the initial cost of the option is taken into account, the net profit to the investor is $1,000.
Figure 1.2 shows how the investor's net profit or loss on an option to purchase one share varies with the final stock price in the example. (We ignore the time value of money in calculating the profit.) It is important to realize that an investor sometimes exercises an option and makes a loss overall. Suppose that in the example Microsoft's stock price is $62 at the expiration of the option. The investor would exercise the option for a gain of 100 x ($62 -$60) = $200 and realize a loss overall of $300 when the initial cost of the option is taken into account. It is tempting to argue that the investor should not exercise the option in these circumstances. However, not exercising would lead to an overall loss of $500, which is worse than the $300 loss when the investor exercises. In general, call options should always be exercised at the expiration date if the stock price is above the strike price.

Εμπορικές συναλλαγές με δικαιώματα προαίρεσης συναντώνται τόσο στα χρηματιστήρια, όσο και στις εξωχρηματιστηριακές/ημιπαράνομες αγορές. Υπάρχουν 2 βασικοί τύποι δικαιωμάτων προαίρεσης. To δικαίωμα αγοράς δίνει το δικαίωμα στον κάτοχο του να αγοράσει τον υποκείμενο τίτλο μέχρι μια συγκεκριμένη ημ/νία και για μια συγκεκριμένη τιμή. Το δικαίωμα πώλησης δίνει το δικαίωμα στον κάτοχο του να πουλήσει τον υποκείμενο τίτλο μέχρι μια συγκεκριμένη ημ/νία και για μία συγκεκριμένη τιμή. Η τιμή που αναγράφεται στο συμβόλαιο είναι γνωστή και ως τιμή άσκησης˙ ενώ η αναγραφόμενη ημ/νία είναι γνωστή ως ημ/νία λήξης ή ωρίμανσης. Τα αμερικανικά δικαιώματα προαίρεσης μπορούν να ασκηθούν ανά πάσα στιγμή και μέχρι την ημ/νία ωρίμασης. Τα ευρωπαϊκά δικαιώματα προαίρεσης μπορούν να ασκηθούν μόνο κατά την ημ/νία λήξης τους. Tα περισσότερα από τα δικαιώματα προαίρεσης που είναι αντικείμενο συναλλαγής στα χρηματιστήρια είναι αμερικάνικα. Στα χρηματιστηριακώς διαπραγματεύσιμα δικαιώματα προαίρεσης επί μετοχών, ένα συμβόλαιο αποτελεί συνήθως μια συμφωνία για την αγορά ή πώληση 100 μετοχών. Σε γενικές γραμμές, τα ευρωπαϊκά δικαιώματα αναλύονται ευκολότερα από τα αμερικάνικα και πολλές φορές μερικές από τις ιδιότητες των δεύτερων συνάγονται από τα αντίστοιχα τους ευρωπαϊκά.
Θα πρέπει να δοθεί έμφαση ότι ένα δικαίωμα προαίρεσης δίνει το δικαίωμα στον κάτοχο του να προχωρήσει στην τέλεση μιας πράξης. Δεν είναι απαραίτητο ο κάτοχος του να προβεί στην άσκηση του εν λόγω δικαιώματος. Αυτό είναι ακριβώς που διαχωρίζει τα δικαιώματα προαίρεσης από τα συμβόλαια μελλοντικής εκπλήρωσης καθώς και από τα προθεσμιακά συμβόλαια όπου ο κάτοχος υποχρεούται να αγοράσει ή να πουλήσει τους υποκείμενους τίτλους. Θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί επίσης ότι ενώ δεν κοστίζει τίποτα η σύναψη ενός συμβολαίου μελλοντικής εκπλήρωσης ή προθεσμιακού συμβολαίου, το αντίθετο ισχύει για τα δικαιώματα προαίρεσης.
Δικαιώματα αγοράς
Πάρτε για παράδειγμα την περίπτωση ενός επενδυτή που προβαίνει στην αγορά ενός ευρωπαϊκού δικαιώματος αγοράς με τιμή άσκησης τα $60 για την αγορά 100 μετοχών της Microsoft. Ας υποθέσουμε ότι η τωρινή τιμή της μετοχής είναι $58, η ημ/νία λήξης αυτού του δικαιώματος είναι μετά από τέσσερις μήνες και ότι η τιμή ενός δικαιώματος για την αγορά μιας μετοχής είναι $5. Η αρχική επένδυση δε, είναι $500. Επειδή το δικαίωμα προαίρεσης είναι ευρωπαϊκό, ο επενδυτής δύναται να το ασκήσει μόνο κατά την ημ/νία που αυτό λήγει. Αν η τιμή της μετοχής κατά την ημ/νία λήξης υπερβαίνει τα $60, τότε το δικαίωμα προαίρεσης θα ασκηθεί. Ας υποθέσουμε τώρα, ότι η τιμή της μετοχής είναι $75. Με την άσκηση του δικαιώματος ο επενδυτής δύναται να αγοράσει 100 μετοχές στην τιμή των $60 έκαστη. Αν οι μετοχές πουληθούν άμεσα, ο επενδυτής αποκομίζει ένα κέρδος $15/μετοχή ή συνολικά $1,500, χωρίς να λάβουμε υπόψη τα κόστη της συναλλαγής. Όταν λάβουμε υπόψη το αρχικό κόστος του δικαιώματος προαίρεσης, τότε το καθαρό κέρδος του επενδυτή αγγίζει το ποσό των $1,000.
Το σχήμα 1,2 απεικονίζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο το καθαρό κέρδος ή η απώλεια του επενδυτή που προκύπτει από το δικαίωμα για αγορά μιας μετοχής, στο παράδειγμα που παρουσιάζεται, ποικίλει ανάλογα με την τελική τιμή της μετοχής, . As a result I have a thorough grasp of the English language and now undertake translation projects from English to Greek that are related to business/marketing/finance, etc.
My confidence in achieving quality translations stems from the fact that my Greek writing skills are of extremely high quality; something very important to the essence of this profession. In other words, I have a thorough and professional knowledge of the target language. In addition, I always strive to adhere to the important translation principle that the translated text should read as if it was originally written in the target language
Despite having an academic background in these fields, I also translate technical papers, mainly related -but not limited- to IT (website and software localization, etc).
I am a computer enthusiast and my daily preoccupation with this subject, either as a web developer or in other fields of computer science, has a positive effect on my translation of relevant material.
Regarding other technical fields, I assess them on a per case basis.
For example, it is one thing to translate a list of parts comprising a jet engine and quite a different one to translate the chemical ingredients of the materials of the turbine blade (part of a jet engine). The latter is a more specialized task than the former and as a result more difficult.
Furthermore, I also undertake psychology projects, something feasible with the aid of a colleague who is a psychologist. Her knowledge of this field is invaluable for me when it comes to translating such projects.
I am also able to translate work from other more general fields; the degree of specialization required will be taken into consideration and in the end will “drive” any decision I make regarding whether I feel competent to undertake a specific project or not. Once again, I assess the projects to be translated case by case.
I do not undertake some fields at all (law and medicine, for example).
I am eager to prove my quality, not only as a translator, but also -importantly- as a business partner. Cooperation and innovation are the most fundamental elements of my business mentality.
