Panel discussion “Machine Translation and Translation Memory: Friends, Foes, Frenemies?”
You must log in before you can access most features of this event.
Schedule:
This session ended at 15:00
Description:
Machine Translation has become an incontrovertible topic within the translation industry.
Advocates and critics have long debated possible risks of replacing the human factor with a machine and the advantages of using MT providers as a tool to assist the translator.
Join Jost Zetzsche, Herbert Eppel, Daniel Benito and Blandine Loze in this open ended discussion about the benefits and challenges of combining both MT and TM.
Jost Zetzsche is an English-to-German technical translator, a translation technology consultant, and a widely published author on various aspects of translation. His computer guide for translators, A Translator's Tool Box for the 21st Century, is now in its eleventh edition; and his technical newsletter for translators goes out to more than 10,000 translation professionals. In 2012, Penguin published his co-authored Found in Translation, a book about translation and interpretation for the general public. His Twitter handle is @jeromobot.
I was raised in a bilingual environment, and was introduced to computers at a very young age. I first got involved in translation when I started helping my father with the translation of repetitive hardware and software manuals. This, combined with my interest in programming, inevitably led to the creation of Déjà Vu in 1993. I went on to study at Imperial College in London, where I obtained an MSc in Mathematics and Computer Science. After completing my studies, I returned to work at ATRIL, where as CTO I now oversee the future vision and development of the products.
My Master's degree in engineering in combination with a post-graduate diploma in International Business has helped me develop a clear picture of both the technical and business aspects of Déjà Vu.
After a number of experiences abroad (in Germany, India and New Zealand), I joined Atril Solutions in 2010.
Initially in charge of sales development in various territories, I gradually started liaising between the Sales & Marketing and R&D teams. I took up the position of R&D Manager for Atril Solutions in 2012, overseeing the development of all Déjà Vu and TEAMserver products, including innovative features and consolidating the development team.
In 2013 I found the perfect balance between product and business development. I am thrilled, as Managing Director of Atril Solutions, to continue this exciting adventure with Déjà Vu.
I have been offering professional German/English translations for more than 15 years. Main subject areas include engineering, technology and science, with particular focus on renewable energy, environment and sustainable development.
I am a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Environmentalist, a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), the Energy Institute (EI), the Association of German Engineers (VDI), the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ) and several other relevant organisations and associations.
Together with a team of highly competent colleagues HE Translations is able to undertake translation assignments of any size and also in other languages including Italian, Spanish, French and Swedish, while at the same time offering maximum quality.

Scheduling training days to fit American time zones
Apr 8, 2014
I am wondering if the training days and this most interesting session could be scheduled somewhat later in the day. I am in the US, Eastern time zone and your schedule makes it very difficult to participate. Could it be recorded so that at least there would be later access? Thanks.

Timezones and recordings
Apr 8, 2014
Thanks for attending - it is difficult to accommodate all time zones, and we perhaps do skew European for some things. This event was also at this time in part due to the client (Atril) being located in France.
The sessions and all content have been recorded and are available now on the session pages. Just go to the session you wish to view and scroll to the bottom of the page for the embedded video player.
Thanks
Drew
