Hi guys,

is there a way to have a doc pretranslated in one go? And if yes, how do I do it? I'm still not very familiar with Cafetran. It is a large file, no TM, and I'd like to work on a pretranslated file to save some time. Thank you!

Pretranslation Jan 8, 2022

Hello Inez,

Pre-translation with what? Fuzzy and exact TM matches or MT suggestions (and if so, which MT)?

actually, I just need a rough pretranslation I can work with, not too crappy, of course. The better the better (but DeepL would be fine, I guess). I need to do a lot of work on this anyway, but if I have it already in a rough form, it will save me time. I just don't want to work segment per segment.

For MT services (not the web version of MT engines) in the sense described here: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/6000186536-machine-translation-with-mt-services, after opening/creating your translation project:

Method 1:

- Right-click inside the specific MT tab page, and select "Create TMX memory". When the TM has been created:
- Translate menu > Insert all exact matches. This will not affect already populated target segments.

Note: This may not work with MyMemory, as it might hit the daily free limitation. In that case, you need to set up a different MT with its API key: Google, Microsoft, DeepL, Amazon, IBM Watson or Yandex.

Method 2:

- Right-click inside the MT tab page you wish to use, and select "Automatic transfer to target segments".
- When you go to the next empty segment, it will be automatically populated with that MT service suggestion. Provided your internet connexion is good, it should be near instant.

This will work with any MT service, including MyMemory (for which you don't need to set up any key, just enable it under Other resources and services in the Dashboard before you create/open a project). MyMemory basically serves Google Translate (and sometimes Microsoft Translator) suggestions.

Thank you, Jean! But I will still need to go from segment to segment, right?

It depends Jan 8, 2022

With method 1, once you insert all exact matches as described above, all the target segments will contain the MT translations.

With method 2, the MT translation is automatically transferred to the target segment when you visit it. The process occurs on a segment-per-segment basis.

Thank you, so basically I have to purchase an API key, right? And where do I right click on the MT? On the dashboard or somewhere in the open project? I'm sorry, I know I am a pain ...

API Keys Jan 8, 2022

Hey Inez,

For MyMemory, you can basically use it with no set up.

For DeepL, you need to subscribe the Advanced Pro plan: https://www.deepl.com/pro/change-plan#single for CAT tool integration. You will find the API key in your account page. There is a 30-day trial.

For Google and Microsoft, you will need to provide billing details, but basically, under a

For Google and Microsoft, you will need to provide billing details, but basically, under a certain characters-per-month limit, it is free.

Here, you will find instructions for Google Translate (plus DeepL, Amazon and ModernMT, but the latter is not supported in CafeTran): https://marcinbas.github.io/api_mt/api_keys.html and here for Microsoft Translator: https://locoaddon.com/how-to-generate-microsoft-translator-api-key/

I think you can find video instructions on the web too.

Once you have your API keys, you add them to Edit > Preferences > MT services in CafeTran.

The same API keys can be used across CAT tools, so you will just need to do this once!

Thank you again, Jean!
I just tried doing a pretranslation in SmartCat, but it constantly told me I don't have enough credits and made me buy more and more, to no effect. The pretranslation stops at 50% and that's it. This CAT used to be pretty good with a really good customer service, no you have to wait 2 weeks for an answer and the CAT is also not much use. I'm really pissed! Sorry for the rant. MateCat doesn't have a pretranslation feature, as far as I know.

I will try what you suggested, thank you!
