After a while, I cancelled my membership on LinkedIn (too expensive for what you get) but anyway taking part in two groups (Translation Agencies – Good, Bad, and Cheap + Unacceptable Translation Rates Naming and Shaming Group) has been very useful.

Not at all Jan 19

When I started to use LinkedIn more than 10 years ago, it was the novelty and seemed important to have a profile there.

The problem appeared a couple of years later when phishing professionals started to use LinkedIn profiles, as it was (still is) much too easy for any hacker to access. So I decided to change my profile to keep my data private in order to stop the amount of spam/scams that I was getting.

After I had done it, it was fine for a while, but then I started to realize the number of want-ads had decreased. I really don't know if it was due to the fact that I'm not sharing any sort of contact information there (not even a profile pic) or not, but it was suspicious.

Then, also, I don't trust in LinkedIn algorithms and the way people's publications/comments end up being indexed in Google's first page for anyone to see, like if it was SEO targeted.

So, I still have the profile, but I don't use it; it's a true waste of time.

Never Jan 19

Never, I received a couple of offers at funny rates (almost asking me to work for free). I am not active on LinkedIn any longer.

yes 06:49

I'm sorry to say, but in the past year LinkedIn has been more useful to me than Proz for finding jobs/clients and business related info. As it turns out, the majority of nonsense job offers also came through this site, to the point that I had to resort to turning off all contact info on my Proz profile.

She turned out to be a scammer... I found Tinder to be more useful.

600+ friends 08:32

I have about 600+ "friends" on LinkedIn, 95 % of them are in the business, but no. Not useful at all.

May I ask how finding jobs/clients works there? Do they contact you directly, or do you reply to job offers? (I don't use the platform, so I don't know anything about its features.)

linkedin for jobs 11:34

The work I found through Linked was simply by using the listings and contacting the person in question - pretty much like you'd apply for a regular job. Knowing a few people here and there obviously helps. I found 3 agencies and 1 direct client (small one) that way.
In contrast, my job hunting on Proz in the past year has always ended in complete silence on the other end or me having to reject ridiculously low rates.

I've only started using Proz for job hunting since last year

You mentioned "The work I found through Linked was simply by using the listings and ..." What did you mean by "using the listings?" Are there job listings in LinkedIn?

LinkedIn has job listings. They are not a freelancer platform, so you'll usually be looking at general job descriptions as "Translator" with agency or company X. There is also a "services" function where clients can request your services on specific projects, but this looks quite useless to me (seemingly random offers from random people - just like on Proz).

I have tried a number of dedicated freelancer platforms like Jellow, Malt, SmartCat and Proz. From these, I only had limited succes with SmartCat (got a few jobs but very low pay). So in comparison LinkedIn has worked much better for me.
