How much content can a Translation Memory Hold?

I´ve been using Trados since 2012 and always use two simultaneous TMs: one specific to the subject or client, and another one related to the language pair, which contains pretty much everything I´ve been doing since day one. I always have the horrible sensation that one day it will just collapse on me. Can I keep using it eternally? Should I start a new one every so often? Has anyone ever had a problem with their over-used or over-abused TMs?

I don't know what file format are you referring to. For Trados Studio TM file format (*.SDLTM files), under the hood, it's just Sqlite database file format.

And according to this specs (https://www.sqlite.org/limits.html):

"14. Maximum Database Size

Every database consists of one or more "pages". Within a single database, every page is the same size, but different database can have page sizes that are powers of two between 512 and 65536, inclusive. The maximum size of a database file is 2147483646 pages. At the maximum page size of 65536 bytes, this translates into a maximum database size of approximately 1.4e+14 bytes (140 terabytes, or 128 tebibytes, or 140,000 gigabytes or 128,000 gibibytes)."

Technically, a Sqlite database can store up to 140,000 GB of data! So, you should not worry about how much content a Trados TM can hold.

isn't there a risk that a very large TM will be slower?

No doubt. It will slow down over time, but it should take very long time to reach to the point for you to notice considerable slowness given current speed of storage devices like SSDs.

How many TUs before it slows down? May 4, 2018

I currently have about 82,000 translation units (sentence based) in my main TM in Studio 2014. Is it approaching the slowdown time?

I have one with 130,000 units and it still works fine. Although I noticed it seemed to double in size (it is now 460 MB) when I used the "upgrade" feature.
