The benefits of a CAT tool are the storage of your translations into a searchable translation memory, allowing for time-saving and cost-saving through matches and near to perfect consistency. The use of ChatGPT or machine translation doesn't change that.
So if you've used a CAT tool in the past, I can't think of a reason to stop doing that because of AI. | | | Two questions - confusing | Nov 23, 2023 |
This is two questions. Some will answer "no" to the first question. Others will answer "yes" to the first question, and some of those will answer "no" to the second question. This poll will be hard to interpret.

No, I do not use AI.
And yes, I would still use my CAT, because the CAT is where I have all the results of using my own REAL intelligence.
In all modesty, I have put a lot of effort into it, and most of my clients think my work is good enough to come back for more.
I still think AI is about as closely related to real intelligence as a cartoon strip is to real life, but there you go.

Interesting.
But the question shows - as many other threads do - that not all clearly understand
1) what AI in general is
2) what AI chat bots are
3) what's the difference between an AI bot and a CAT tool.

My CAT tool (Computer-Aided Translation) is as far as possible old-fashioned Translation Memory, offline, with no additions from the Cloud etc.
It does use fuzzy logic of course, but the input is all human, either mine or imported from trusted colleagues and clients.
When I want to use anything else, and I often do, I search for it on the Net, but what I save in the CAT has all been past human intelligence, and I reserve the right to override it in new contexts or when it needs updating.
AI is nobody without my CAT )
Thank you, my CAT, for all you do all year long.

My selling point is still human intelligence I am pretty sure Zea_Mays means that the topic starter doesn't understand the difference between the above two concepts. That is why the poll question is so awkward and ambiguous. In terms of translation, AI is just another name for MT (you don't use AI to create images or for any other non-translation applications). And MT has nothing to do with CAT tools. The topic starter obviously has no idea about what they're asking.

Nice to see that somebody here does understand what AI is.
The only real "intelligence" in the AI scenario is in the mind of the human being who is observing and interpreting it.
Or not, as the case may be.
And as others have pointed out, this is a daft poll because the two questions might have different and opposite answers. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Are you using AI in your work?
