Hi there,

I'm currently responding to a tender. So far, I have been practicing translation as a side activity and I haven't used any CAT tools.

Hi there,

I'm currently responding to a tender. So far, I have been practicing translation as a side activity and I haven't used any CAT tools.

According to the contract specifications, I may be required to take one if my application is accepted.

The specifications are as follows :

"The contractor must be able to process a document that has been pre-processed in a translation environment.

Where appropriate, the contractor must be able to process and return to the purchaser files containing both the source text and the translation matches obtained from the purchaser's internal translation memories (e.g. XLIFF format or equivalent)".

Since the tender doesn't prescribe any precise tool, I would like to know if I could use Cafetran, at least at the beginning.

If so, can anyone tell me which Cafetran commands/manipulations are relevant to this specification? I plan to immerse myself in the knowledge base, but some guidelines are welcome so that I can find my way around right from the start.

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can Oct 3, 2024

You can use CafeTran Espresso.

After having downloaded the client's XLIFF file, start CafeTran Espresso. Make sure that the checkboxes for the Project Translation Memory and the Project Glossary are ticked. Then drag the XLIFF onto the Dashboard. Translate the project. When you have finished the project, click on the Finalize button.

Once the translation grid (the table on the top left) with the segments is visible, you can continue as demonstrated in this video from the developer himself: https://youtu.be/_00CbCDQUqQ?t=53

Thank you very much Hans.

I would have a more generic question.

It seems that there will be a discount on the total number of words in the final job, to determine the amount; if I understand correctly, we're in the post-editing field and the passages not modified by the contractor (me), are not billable.

Does the auditor have a tool that instantly identifies the parts reworked by the contractor, or does he have to examine both versions (pre-processed and f

That's not how post-editing is supposed to work. You normally work with a word rate (an acceptable post-editing rate would be 60-70% of your conventional translation rate), regardless of sentences that don't need editing.

Even sentences that don't need editing have at least been reviewed, which costs time and should be paid.

Edit distance Oct 4, 2024

That's the concept of "edit distance", and yes it's just a matter of diff (comparing changes between unedited output and your edits, kind of "before and after").

I remember being introduced to the concept in my TAUS post-editing training.

I've met agencies that wanted to apply this but I don't have experience with it since I've never accepted to work under such terms: this is both against the translator in general and counter to sound principles of (post-)editing, which

I've met agencies that wanted to apply this but I don't have experience with it since I've never accepted to work under such terms: this is both against the translator in general and counter to sound principles of (post-)editing, which implies review of every segment as Lieven Malaise wrote, but also efficiency: you are in effect incentivised to make unnecessary changes in order to get paid.

I'd stay away from such a logic.
