The first part of this article introduced the general topic of websites popularity and started discussing criteria for the ranking of a website on search engines. Two essential conditions, it was said, are consistent updated content and timespan of online existence. And two accessory conditions are keyword optimization and backlink generation. The former was treated in part 1. Now, the latter will be developed. And a question will also be discussed: what kind of keywords should a website stand upon?

The most proper external links to your webpages are not the correspondent URLs, but rather the keywords used in your code tags, particularly the title tag. This means that if your home page URL is www.myhomepage.net and its title is ‘This is an example’ then external links should as often as possible be This is an example. Also, the best pages that should contain backlinks to your site are highly ranked ones. A large number of websites usually sell or exchange links, and the purchase can be mediated by specific websites which do that as a service.

But buying and swapping links aren’t the only ways for you to get links to your pages. You can promote your website through Google Adwords and similar services, including some free ones. Also, you should every now and then take some of your text contents and make good articles out of it containing a resource box and a link to a page of your site. You could also create completely new articles for the same purpose. Anyway, you can regularly have a specific service provider submit your articles automatically to article directories.

A further way to promote your site is posting useful or interesting videos that invite viewers to visit it. Another is to show its link as part of your signature in taking part of forums and question-answering communities, as well as in commenting blog posts. Other than that, your site can offer a newsletter visitors can subscribe to and such a service can be promoted in all the occasions presented above. Finally, spending some time on Twitter and on social networks such as Facebook can undoubtedly be worthwhile.

Well, all these ranking-oriented strategies may not work if you choose the wrong keywords. You must check the competitiveness of each keyword considered. A longstanding site with good contents and thousands of good links will beat any other that contains the same keywords but isn’t as competitive in age, contents or backlinks. The solution for a new or small website is to invest in becoming more competitive by choosing less competitive keywords. Ranking higher in search engines will therefore depend to a large extent upon specific instead of general keyword combinations different from the ones chosen by the big old sites.

So, you need not only to take good advantage of Google search engine by checking results from different search tests, but also to use tools such as Google Keyword Tool, which is a free one, to test possible new search terms for your web pages. You had better choose less competitive keywords which you can generate and test with the free tool mentioned and you should never lose sight of the need for a keyword to be composed of at least three words.

If you want examples of good providers of the services related to SEO, don't trust those who promise secrets revealed, magic things or immediate results. However tempting and convincing they sound, they are simply lying.
