翻譯是不是屬於一種厭惡性工作呢，不同的人會有不同的看法。有人可以是苦中作樂，亦可以是樂在其中不自知。香港人說﹕做個一行，厭個一行。意思是不管做那一行業，做得久了，便會對工作產生厭惡。對自由譯員來說，酬勞是件工計算，屬單幹型，可能唯一的工作動力，就是來自報酬。不似得上班一族，倦了就來個 BREAK，跟同事談談，到外邊走走，出外吃LUNCH，朝9晚5，很容易便過，工作從不帶回家，長命工夫，長命做，做不完，明天再算。至于連夜趕工，從來沒有周末、周日之分，亦無假期，這種工作及生活，不是神經病，又是什麼？至于那些愈忙愈開心的，病也是一種樂趣。

记不得是八零年代的哪一年某一月，在德国罗滕堡的天主教会办的“大陆杂志”(Kontinente) 向我邀稿。该期的主题是不同民族对“和平”这个概念的想法，所以也请我谈谈中文里的“和平”概念。

我用毛笔写了“和平”这两个字，然后写了一篇不到五百字的短文，说明中文里的想法：“和”是由“禾”及“口”两个字组成的，也就是“有粮食吃”；“平”是两边平衡的“天平”，意思是分配均匀。老祖宗大概认为，人只要有粮食分配得均匀，大家都有得吃，就和平了。所以孔子说，不患寡而患不均。可是，和平恐怕不那么简单。
整个地球生产的粮食应该足够养活所有的人，但富庶的地区粮食过剩，贫瘠的地区却经常闹饥荒。也许有人会天真地想：只要把富庶地区的过剩粮食搬运到贫瘠地区救济饥民，那就天下太平。可惜，搬运粮食也需要耗费资源，美国和欧洲的农民组织在生产过剩的时候，宁可一把火销毁过多的谷物，也不可能搬运到非洲救济闹饥荒的地区。道理是：谷贱伤农。生产过剩时，原本就卖不得好价钱，哪来的余钱雇人把余粮搬送到非洲去？
其实，同样的现象发生在翻译者身上。某些翻译者由于名气或运气，项目接到手软，要他分出一些给别人，那可麻烦，因为他得为客户负责，别人做的稿件，他得保证品质，这就得花费了，所以他往往宁可拒绝接稿，也不敢轻易接下来转包，或随便介绍别人，而即使他介绍别人了，客户也不见得放心用。因此，大得无法想象的翻译市场上，不患寡却经常患不均。
当初我强力主张 ProZ 网站汉化，让更多人来到这里寻找机会，想到的就是“均”的问题。这有点像移民到欧美的人，享受高度发展的社会的好处后，希望别人也能享受到，但有的人却预先看到若有更多移民进入欧美会产生怎样的“后遗症”。
如何做到资源不寡且均呢？这就是“和平”不容易达到，也不容易维持的原因。
